The Durham & District branch fosters Rabbits and Guinea Pigs with volunteers whilst seeking new homes for them.
ADOPTION
Rabbits are inquisitive, active animals with lots of energy who need to have
a large stimulating environment. Keeping them confined to a 3ft long hutch/cage
all their lives does not meet their needs as animals and can lead to muscle
and joint problems due to inactivity and can lead to the rabbit becoming depressed.
They need to have a hutch of a size which allows the rabbit to be able to
run about in, and have a permanent run attached which they can use during
the day or rest and shelter in the hutch when they choose. To be kept loose
in a shed or house as a houserabbit is also acceptable. Potential adopters
will be asked to supply a living environment that ensures the rabbits will
have an active quality of life.
NEUTERING
Our rabbits will come already neutered or spayed and this will enable a male
and female to be kept together which is the best pairing. A rabbit needs to
have the company of its own species and pairs can bond very closely one rabbit
often grieving when the partner dies.
DIET
The diet should consist of mainly vegetables such as spring greens, carrots,
broccoli, cabbage, and unlimited quantities of good quaity green hay/dried
grass and straw to chew on with one bowl of a nonselective food a day.
Adoption is £15 per rabbit.
At present we have Rabbits with different fosterers. If you would like to rehome a rabbit or guinea pig please contact us on 0191 384 0269 (Kath) or email Alison on rspca-durham@live.co.uk.
